Exercise leads to better health...No kidding?

Groundbreaking news!  A recent study showed that smokers who exercise have a 35% lower risk of developing lung cancer than smokers who lead a sedentary lifestyle.  Unfortunately, I don't know any smokers who exercise.

A 35% reduction in risk is nothing to dismiss.  As a health practioner, I can tell you this is potentially big news.  Unfortunately, it relies on a society of people who want to take a pill, not responsibility, to achieve good health.  So what does this have to do with us in Indiana?

The results show good health is mostly up to every individual...No one can exercise for you.  We need recipients of free health care (Medicaid)  to quit smoking, but also to lead more healthy lifestyles.  Exercise doesn't have to cost a dime.  Walking around the block is free, but the savings to taxpayers can be worth millions in eventual care.  (Yes it is possible to get them to quit)

It also goes to show that the greatest strides in health are dependent on the patient. Not the amount of money we throw down the drain to insure them all.

So in the end, as they wrote in todays Indy Star, If your going to smoke, at least exercise.
