Same Sex Marriage and the State

The state has overstepped its bounds by issuing a marriage license in the first place.   A state separate from the church should only administer civil unions, regardless of sexual preference.  Marriage is a religious rite that predates our government by thousands of years.

The state does not recognize the Jewish Bar Mitzvahs (at age 12) as the legal coming of age for Jewish boys.  Rather,  the state says the legal age of adulthood is 18.  Should the state pick and choose which religious rites it will dabble in with it's "vested"  interest?

Many people feel a civil union is not enough.  They argue same sex partners deserve the title of "marriage."  But government can't force a religion to make exceptions to their centuries old rituals.

My wife and I were both brought up in the Christian tradition.  But, the Catholic Church sees marriage as a sacrament and does not recognize our marriage as such as we weren't married in their tradition.  We can't make the Catholic Church accept our union as a sacrament, nor do we wish to try.

In the end, activist groups should be pushing for the government to rectify this over 200 year error.  The burden is on the government to determine how to do so fairly.  Leave the churches alone on this one.
