All Day Kindergarten is Not Detrimental...or Beneficial.
It's true and I have proof. The Education Commission of the States, a resource the Indiana Department of Education loves to quote, says that after 25 years of research "experts are in general agreement there are no detrimental affects to attending full-day kindergarten." Don't take my word for it. Micah Clark, a former member of the Governor's Roundtable on Education wrote a fantastic piece called Show Us Actual Benefit of All-Day Kindergarten. He identifies many reasons not to pursue all day kindergarten unless you're a politician.
What most people pushing for all day kindergarten really want is all day child care. This is a HUGE difference. Politicians know that spending $240 million for afternoon day care will be very difficult to get taxpayers to swallow. But if they succeed, they can gain a number of votes. If you follow my BLOG, you know my feelings on that! (Click here if you don't)
If you read Micah Clark's article (linked above) and still see a need to push for all day kindergarten, please let me know by adding a comment to this entry.
