Please check your tuberculosis and drugs at the border.
There are major holes in U.S. health care, one of which is located at the southern border. According to a March 2006 National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease report, tuberculosis "...occurs among foreign born individuals nearly 9 times as frequently as among people born in the United States." Furthermore, "in 2004, a very high percentage of Asians (95%) and Hispanics (75%) who were born outside of the United States were reported to have TB." If this is true, how many potential cases of TB have we imported? Millions!
According to a Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons Spring 2005 article, "...many illegal aliens simply cross our borders medically unexamined" concluding "America's inadequate federal border enforcement permits massive daily border penetrations that violate the integrity of our medicine and our national security."
Legal immigration allows for CDC recommended physical screenings and for tight control of disease, this is why border closure is important. Legal immigration is vital to the strength of our country and will continue playing an important role in the future.
There can be no debate that drug use is another major public health issue we need to confront. Limiting the availability of pseudoephedrine that can be purchased over the counter many be helping decrease the amount of crystal meth that is produced in Indiana. But as today's Indianapolis Star points out Imported meth is the State's new scourge. What they can't make they can import!
As Ronald Regan said "facts are stubborn things." They are not racist, or bigoted. How can we fix health care if we fail to stop the rapid importation of infectious disease and drugs over the border? How much are we as citizens willing to invest personally to guarantee the health and safety of our children? I'm willing to stand up for what is right for the long term health of Indiana and the United States. Are you? As a constituent, I need to know what you think. Let me know.

Thank you for honestly informing us about real issues. You have my vote. My 19 year old is voting as well. The young people I know are very interested.
